Urbano highlights - Data management
 
Pipe design is a very complex procedure in which many data should be managed. Usually there is a set of standard design data, like position data, element description data, hydraulic data, excavation data etc. Very often there is a necessity to manage additional data of some kind. Those data are not directly connected with the design process, but they can better describe the nature of designed elements, design environment, construction conditions and requirements, existing utilities and so on.
 
Any design software which upholds a BIM workflow should have the possibility to manage any type of additional data in order to better describe different aspects of the designed elements.
 
Urbano supports any OLE DB compatible database like Access, Oracle and MS SQL Server. The other data sources are supported as well (SHP, TXT, LandXML...).  The Urbano concept of additional data helps to match all necessary data.
 
Very often new infrastructure is  designed in an area with some existing utilities. For maximum efficiency, the existing utilities should be shown with all associated data. Urbano enables the powerful functionality to import existing pipe networks from many sources with all associated data.




1.    Data management – additional data definition


Urbano offers the possibility to define any kind of additional data (i.e. user data). Those data can be defined at any moment. Additional data have equal status as built-in data i.e they can be used in any design procedure – labels, data grids, profiles… 


2. Data management – using additional data
 
In Urbano, all defined additional data can be used in the design process without any limitations. You can set the data values, use them in data grids, create labels, use feature maps and used in profile bands.


 3. Data management – import from external database

Urbano supports any OLE DB compatible database like Access, Oracle and MS SQL Server. By using the correct Windows driver, you can access any database table. Next, you must connect data from specific tables with specific data from Urbano. The Urbano concept of additional data helps to match all necessary data.

In Urbano pipes and structures are stored in catalogs. In external sources pipes and structures are described with some data. To have a complete network, you have to match the data from the external source that describes pipes and structures with the existing catalog items by using the advanced data-matching function.


 4. Data management – import from external database and correction

Next, you must connect data from specific tables with specific data from Urbano. The Urbano concept of additional data helps to match all necessary data.

Often, the network stored in the external source is not completely correct. When you import the network with all associated data, it is very easy to find and correct some errors or inconstancies. After finalizing the changes, you can export the whole network back to the same source.


5. Data management – import from external database and conversion to AutoCAD Civil 3D

Urbano supports any OLE DB compatible database like Access, Oracle and MS SQL Server. By using the correct Windows driver, you can access any database table. Next, you must connect data from specific tables with specific data from Urbano. The Urbano concept of additional data helps to match all necessary data.

Urbano enables exporting the pipe network with all associated data to many sources. One of the possibilities is the conversion of an Urbano network to AutoCAD Civil 3D. As a prerequisite you need to have the same pipes and structures at both ends, in Urbano and AutoCAD Civil 3D. By using the conversion command, you can manage an appropriate binding of pipes and structures.


6. Data management – import from ESRI SHP

Urbano offers full support for importing ESRI SHP files (point, line and polygon). Thanks to the concept of additional data, all attribute data can be imported. The SHP record is represented with the intelligent Urbano network. Urbano offers many tools to check source data and to export the corrected network.


7. Data management – export to ESRI SHP and import to Autodesk Infraworks

BIM design technologies foster the undisturbed flow of all important information to different stakeholders in the building process. One of the important new platforms which fits well in the BIM process is Autodesk Infraworks.

Infraworks can import data from many different sources. Based on imported data it is possible to visualize the content of the complete project. In addition, it is possible to check the mutual correlation of different design objects. Also, it is possible to make some conceptual design directly in Infraworks.

With Urbano you can export the pipe network with all associated data to several formats which can be easily imported in Infraworks. For example, Urbano can export network to SHP format which Infraworks reads directly.


8. Data management – export to Autodesk Navisworks

BIM design technologies foster the undisturbed flow of all important information to different stakeholders in the building process. One of the important new platforms which fits well in the BIM process is Autodesk Infraworks.

Autodesk Navisworks can check the mutual interference of 3D objects - clashes. IYou can make a clash analysis and communicate with members of the design team about resolving the issues. Additionally, in Navisworks you can make a time based analysis (4D) and evaluate the whole project.

Navisworks can import data from many sources. To make an efficient analysis using Navisworks, it is not enough to import simple 3D objects. Many additional information which describe the real nature of the imported objects are necessary.
Urbano can export the pipe network with all associated data to the IFC format (Industry Foundation Classes). IFC is the standard data exchange format in the BIM process. The Urbano concept of additional data helps a lot with a real BIM workflow.


9.    Data management – connecting external documents

Urbano features built-in and additional data. Both categories can be used consistently throughout the program. In addition, Urbano enables adding external documents to network elements i.e. pipes and structures. Using this option you can connect documents like pictures, videos and text to pipes and structures.

The connection between network elements and external documents is very flexible. In essence, the name of the external document should be connected a unique Urbano element data, most often, the element name. You can connect many different documents to a single Urbano element with a single rule, as only a subset of the document name has to be recognized.
